SAN FRANCISCO – Hewlett-Packard is recalling more than 6 million personal-computer power cords in the U.S. and Canada, citing reports of overheating and melting units.

The cords, distributed with Hewlett-Packard and Compaq notebooks and related products, were sold from September 2010 to June 2012, the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement on Tuesday.

Affected customers are eligible to receive a replacement for the LS-15 power cords, which were made in China. Hewlett- Packard received 29 reports of power cords overheating, melting or charring, leading to two claims of minor burns and 13 claims of minor property damage, according to the government agency.

“Hewlett-Packard customers affected by this program will be eligible to receive a replacement AC power cord for each verified, recalled AC power cord at no cost,” Kelli Schlegel, a spokeswoman for Hewlett-Packard, said in an emailed statement. “We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.”

Hewlett-Packard and Google halted sales of the Chromebook 11 laptop in November 2013 after some users reported overheating power supplies.
