Wildfire: About 100 on Cascades evacuation alert

PORTLAND — Fire bosses have put about 100 residents near the Cascade Range town Oakridge on alert to get out of the way of a wildfire.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports that officials briefly evacuated a mobile home park and about 60 homes Wednesday night after the fire grew.

The fire has sent huge volumes of smoke into the Eugene-Springfield area and Central Oregon. In Oakridge itself, local regulators said the air quality Thursday was down to unhealthy levels.

Lightning started a fire two weeks ago, and three small fires have combined into what’s called the Deception Complex fire.

The smoke wasn’t bothersome until the wind shifted Wednesday.

Firefighters say they hope cooler temperatures expected Friday will help tamp down the fire.
