Letter: Damage by dysfunctional Congress

The interview with Rep. Liz Pike, R-Camas, and her “word salad” responses published in the Aug. 25 Political Beat column would have been LOL funny were it not so emblematic of the contempt that elected Republican officials hold for their constituents.

In Robert Draper’s book “Do Not Ask What Good We Do,” describing the dysfunction of Congress, any independent or unbiased observer must be aghast at the audacious mendacity of top-tier Republicans who plotted to do any and everything possible to destroy President Obama’s administration as they met at the Caucus Room restaurant on Jan. 20, 2009, his first inauguration day. It seems wrecking the economy and visiting enormous pain and suffering on the electorate were of absolutely no concern so long as they could limit President Obama to one term.

Republican officials are doubtless aware of the recent CNN poll that shows only 40 percent of the people know who controls the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. The only explanation for their behavior is their knowledge that most people know that a Democrat is in the White House and will blame any damage done on Democrats.

Is it safe to vote for anyone in a party so bent on gaining power?
