Try This: Dogs can get in the swim

Canines can celebrate the end of summer with a splash in the Marshall Community Center pool before it’s drained for an annual week of maintenance. Small dogs of 25 pounds or less can have the pool to themselves from noon to 1:30 p.m. before the waters are open to dogs of all types from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

When: Noon to 4 p.m. Monday.

Exploration and cornbread

Families looking for a day of exploration can explore the trails near the Cedar Creek Grist Mill before dropping by the mill for a treat during Cornbread and Bluegrass Day. Visitors can snack on homemade cornbread with sweet and savory toppings while musicians perform at the mill, built in 1876. The mill will also be open for regular tours on Sunday.

Costumed and concert fun

The final day of CouvFest NW will showcase Vancouver’s diverse musical talent with an all-ages concert in Esther Short Park. Today’s performers include The Solars, Foreign Talks, Outer Space Heaters, Barbara in the Attic, The Sindicate, The Shivas and Rags & Ribbons. Attendees are encouraged to donate school supplies for the Evergreen School District Foundation.

Esther Short Park will also be a prime spot to people watch as Kumoricon’s costumed attendees explore downtown Vancouver. The convention is dedicated to Japanese anime and manga comic books, featuring array of panels, screenings, costume contests, special guests and games. Minors ages 13 to 17 are required to have a signed parent permission form to attend the convention. Those 12 and younger must be accompanied by a paid adult.

Growing sport of paddleboarding

Professional and recreational stand-up paddleboard athletes will compete in SUP Salmon Classic National Race. Visitors can enjoy tonight’s pre-race party with music by God Fearing Women at Reflection Plaza. Sunday’s event at Cottonwood Beach in Captain William Clark Park includes an 8-mile professional course, a 4-mile recreational course, and a 2-mile youth and novice course, along with demonstrations, clinics and music for those interested in paddleboarding. Registration is capped at 200.

When: 6 to 8 tonight; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
