Donor of $100M to OHSU is Columbia Sportswear chair

PORTLAND — The anonymous donor that gave $100 million to Oregon Health & Science University last month has been revealed to be Columbia Sportswear’s chairwoman Gert Boyle, and the donation was made to honor her late sister.

The Oregonian reports that Boyle’s $100 million brings the university $70 million closer to triggering Phil and Penny Knight’s matching $500 million donation that the Nike cofounder promised a year ago.

Knight Cancer Institute head Brian Druker says that when he was a grad student in California, he was mentored by Boyle’s sister, Hildegard Lamfrom. Druker then met Boyle and told her about working with her sister.

Lamfrom had been a research scientist. She died in 1984 at the age of 62 from a brain tumor.
