Letter: Neglect is insult to city residents

The Columbian
Published: August 30, 2014, 5:00pm

At a recent neighborhood quarterly meeting, the city manager responded to a resident’s concern about the lack of street median maintenance with the reply that street median maintenance was not a priority.

The Columbian published a letter with comments from a visitor from Chicago stating her dismay at the shabbiness of our city, comparing it with her surroundings in Chicago. Similar letters from our area residents, echoing her observations, have been published.

Basic services have a tremendous impact on property values, a deterrent to crime and overall livability of a community. Vancouver now has the look of a neglected city and has been in this condition for some time. What an audacious insult to Vancouver residents to have the logo “Vancouver Sparkles” on their trash cans.

Are our elected city council members oblivious to weed infestation and general neglect in medians, on sides of streets, in open spaces and other public areas? Council members are derelict in their obligation to residents/taxpayers to ensure that basic services are provided to make this a liveable community.
