Vancouver police helped law enforcement from Portland apprehend a suspected car thief Tuesday night after a chase through parts of west Vancouver.

The Vancouver Police Department was called at 8:31 p.m. to help Portland police stop a stolen 1998 Honda Civic that was traveling at speeds of up to 80 mph and heading northbound toward the Interstate 5 Bridge, said Vancouver Officer Ilia Botvinnik. The car crossed the bridge and exited onto Mill Plain Boulevard.

Vancouver police, aware of the pursuit, caught up to the car.

The vehicle, which had an Oregon license plate, was found unoccupied near the intersection of T and Sixth streets. Police set up containment in the area and, with the help of a police dog, found the suspect at 311 E. Reserve St., according to police.

The man, identified by police as Khamjo Veraha, 34, of Portland, was detained at 9:24 p.m. near Pearson Field, Botvinnik said. He was arrested and booked into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of hit-and-run, attempting to elude and possession of a stolen vehicle, police said.

No one was injured in the pursuit.
