• Artifacts and exhibits about early life in America, pioneers, logging and Mount St. Helens, with an archival library available for research. “The Vanishing Logger,” photography by Cheryle Easter.

• “Native American Trails: Fire and the Seasonal Round,” on the exploration of George McClellan.

• Music open mic session, 7 p.m. first Friday of each month, hosted by Wayne Hoffman.

• “Roots of Wisdom: Native Knowledge. Shared Science,” through Dec. 7. This exhibit draws on traditional knowledge and science to shed light on how native communities are exploring their lands in new ways.

• Scientific Saturdays features educational activities, from a flight simulator lab to model-glider building, along with a tour of the T28 open cockpit.

• “The Wizard of Oz,” through Jan. 18. Celebrate the movie’s 75th anniversary with a hands-on adventure that follows the yellow brick road from Munchkinland to the Emerald City and the Wicked Witch’s castle.

• “Groundwork” is the newest permanent exhibit at the museum, visitors can uses shovels, buckets, movers and chutes in a playground of rubber mulch.

• “Go Figure!” through Feb. 1. Using popular children’s books, the exhibit shows children how math is used in everyday life. Presented in English and Spanish.

• “Take Me to the Top,” 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, $4. Travel 40 feet up into the simulated forest canopy and learn about the plants and animals that live in this uppermost layer of the forest.

One of the largest collections of building artifacts in the United States, plus rotating exhibits and weekly historic preservation educational programs.

Cedar Creek Grist Mill, 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays. 43907 N.E. Grist Mill Road, Woodland; Donations accepted. Built in 1876, the mill is one of the few braced-frame buildings left in Washington. 360-225-5832 or www.cedarcreekgristmill.com

The Grotto, 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily. 8840 N.E. Skidmore St., Portland; free for the lower gardens; $4.50, $3.50 for seniors, $2.50 for children ages 6-11 for upper-level gardens. Sixty-two acres of botanical gardens, more than 100 shrines, and sanctuaries for rest and relaxation on two levels. Covering a city block in Portland’s Old Town Chinatown, the garden features more than 30,000 plant species and year-round cultural events, activities and demonstrations. • Christmas Past, Present and Future through Jan. 2. The historic house will be filled with themed Christmas trees, wreaths, ribbons and ornaments during this annual holiday exhibit, with community musicians regularly performing in the mansion’s Music Room.

Portland Japanese Garden, noon to 4 p.m. Mondays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. 611 S.W.
