Bruce Barnum, a 1982 graduate of Columbia River High School, will coach the Portland State football team through 2015.

The interim head coach since Nigel Burton was fired last month, Barnum will maintain his role for the 2015 season. Barnum was given a 12-month contract.

Portland State is currently searching for a new athletic director.

“That person, when selected, is not expected to be on board until after the new year,” Portland State said in a news release. “As a result, to maintain the continuity of the football program and allow for active recruiting by the remaining football staff, Barnum was given the 12-month contract.”

A native of Vancouver, Barnum has been a college coach for 25 years.

Barnum has been the offensive coordinator at Portland State the past five seasons.

The Vikings have compiled the top four rushing totals in school history over the last four years, averaging over 200 yards rushing per game each season. In 2013, the Vikings ranked third in the nation in total offense (540.5 yards per game).

Portland State just completed its 2014 season at 3-9 overall, 2-6 in the Big Sky Conference.
