Letter: Unveil secrecy cloaking birth origin

The Columbian
Published: December 10, 2014, 12:00am

Many thanks for the Dec. 8 story “New adoption law solving mysteries,” on the law in Washington state allowing adoptees to embark on the healing journey of reunion. My own reunion took place nearly 20 years ago and was a life-changing experience.

My hope is that The Columbian will continue to write these stories of the adoptees’ struggles. It is still illegal in nearly three-quarters of our states for adopted adults to access their original birth certificate. It is more than time to stop this veil of lies and secrecy pretending it is the wish of a birth mother. Just go ask one.

I also have appreciation for a woman in the Legislature, Sen. Ann Rivers, R-La Center, who advocated for these long-denied rights.
