The east end of state Highway 504 near Mount St. Helens has closed for the winter, the Washington State Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

The highway, known as the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway, is closed at Coldwater Lake near Milepost 45, according to WSDOT. The agency closed the roadway Wednesday to clear trees and debris from a mudslide, and will keep it closed until spring.

That stretch of the highway closes every year due to snow and ice. Coldwater Lake will still be accessible as weather conditions allow, according to WSDOT.

Highway 504 stretches between Castle Rock and the Johnston Ridge Observatory near Mount St. Helens. The observatory is already closed for the season.
