A suspected intoxicated driver caused a hit-and-run crash and assaulted an officer while trying to avoid being arrested, according to the Battle Ground Police Department.

Juan Pablo Montiel-Reyes, 20, of Gresham, Ore., was reportedly behind the wheel of a vehicle that ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle in the 1200 block of Northwest 12th Street at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to police. Montiel-Reyes then fled the scene of the crash, police said. No one was injured.

Police arrested Montiel-Reyes, placed him in handcuffs and left him in a patrol vehicle.

When the officer returned to the patrol vehicle to speak with him, Montiel-Reyes allegedly, having slipped his handcuffs, assaulted the officer and tried to escape, police said.

The officer was able to detain Montiel-Reyes until another officer arrived to assist.

Montiel-Reyes was booked into Clark County Jail on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, third-degree escape, driving under the influence of intoxicants, hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license.

The police officer was not seriously injured during the struggle and did not receive medical attention.

Montiel-Reyes was also arrested on an outstanding warrant from Vancouver for failing to appear on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants and driving with a suspended license.
