RIDGEFIELD — The Hockinson boys basketball team kept its composure.

Leading just about the entire second half, the Hawks saw their lead go away, and then fell behind in overtime.

No problem.

Stick to the plan, the Hawks said. Stick to the plan.

Jared Broer scored four points in overtime, including the game winner, and the Hawks got past Ridgefield 50-47 in overtime Monday night in a Class 2A Greater St. Helens League game.

“There’s not really an individual that helps us win. As a team, we win the game,” Broer said.

True, but it was Broer who pushed the team when it needed it most.

Trailing by two in overtime, he got the assist to Austin Steimle to tie the game. Trailing by two again, Broer found the basket. Then tied in the final minute, Broer got to the hoop and scored with 34 seconds remaining.

After a Ridgefield miss, Steimle made a free throw for a three-point lead with 13 seconds left. Ridgefield would go on to miss two 3-point attempts.

“We were just thinking, ‘Don’t foul,’ ” Broer said. “Hands up, straight up. Contest, but do not foul.”

Broer credited Brian Prigmore for his defense on the final shot, calling Prigmore one of the best defenders in the state.

Broer finished with a game-high 16 points for the Hawks. Steimle added 12.

Austin DeHaan had 14 points for the Spudders. JD Wolniewicz added nine points — all in the second half. It was Wolniewicz who sent this game into overtime, grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back up and in with six seconds to play in regulation.

Hockinson used a 10-0 run in the third quarter to take a 35-25 lead. Ridgefield, though, battled back, tying the game three times in the fourth quarter.

The Spudders’ first lead after halftime came in overtime. Austin Wellman scored the team’s four points in the extra session.

The Hawks, though, never panicked.

Hockinson coach Trevor Person said the thing he loves about his group is the ability to learn from practice to practice, game to game.

“The boys looked a lot more poised than earlier in the season,” Person said.
