More than two months after announcing they would field a team in USL Pro, the Portland Timbers on Thursday announced that Jay Vidovich will be the head coach for Timbers 2.

Vidovich, 54, will also be an assistant coach for the Timbers.

The head coach at Wake Forest for 21 seasons, Vidovich was twice named the college coach of the year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and was a five-time Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year. The Demon Deacons won the 2007 NCAA title and have made the NCAA tournament in 13 of the past 14 seasons.

Timbers 2 — or T2 — is one of several new USL Pro clubs owned by Major League Soccer teams. T2 will play its home matches at the University of Portland. The schedule is expected to begin in March.

“After having the opportunity to work with Jay for the national team program and coaching against him for many years in college, I can say without hesitation we have found the ideal fit to serve as our head coach of T2,” Timbers coach Caleb Porter said in a statement announcing the hire.

In 2009, Vidovich served as a scout for the under-23 men’s national team that Porter coached. Vidovich was also an assistant coach for the under-18 national team.

Vidovich was a three-year starter for Ohio Wesleyan and captain of the 1982 team that reached the NCAA semifinals.

He began coaching as an assistant at the University of Denver. He joined Wake Forest as an assistant coach in 1986 and became head coach in 1994.
