Clark teams come up short in tournament action

The Columbian
Published:

Leave it to Skagit Valley to knock the Clark men’s basketball team into the consolation round.

A 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds to play beat the Penguins 78-76 on Friday in the semifinal of the Clackamas Crossover in Oregon City.

The last time these teams met was in the quarterfinals of the NWAC Tournament last season, and Skagit Valley won in similar fashion 75-73.

Clark would go on to finish fifth in the NWAC, but will be playing for third place at 1 p.m. today against either Treasure Valley or host Clackamas.

Bryan Berg led Clark (5-3) in scoring with 15 points. Rian Bassett had 13, Antony Dunn had 12, and Darrius Mathis and Evan Garrison had 10 points each.

It was Garrison’s late shot, allowed when a Skagit Valley player interfered, that put Clark ahead 76-75.

Women

Clark hung tough with No. 1 ranked Umpqua before falling 72-66 in the semifinal of the Skagit Crossover at Mount Vernon.

Taylor Howlett and Megan Pyles each had 16 points for Clark (4-3).

Alexa Orcutt had 11 points and six rebounds.

Clark will play Yakima today for third place.
