Hockinson High School is seeking a new coach for its girls soccer program.

Zack Goldfinch, who coached the Hawks for the last three seasons, said he was surprised that he was let go at the end of this season.

Hockinson principal and athletic director Brian Lehner said he does not comment on personnel decisions. He confirmed the school has an opening for a head coach for girls soccer and said he hopes to have a new coach hired by the end of January.

“I’m bummed,” Goldfinch said. “I put a lot of time and effort into it, and (the decision) was a surprise.”

In three seasons under Goldfinch, Hockinson had 42 wins, 17 losses and three draws. The Hawks have made the state playoffs nine consecutive years. They advanced to the quarterfinals in two of the last three seasons — the only time in program history the Hawks have won state playoff matches. This season they fell 3-2 to Squalicum in the quarterfinals and the Bellingham school went on to win the Class 2A state championship.

Hockinson finished second to Ridgefield in the Class 2A Greater St. Helens League this season, and lost to the Spudders in the District 4 championship match. Hockinson was the state academic champion among Class 2A girls soccer teams with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.819.
