As a former elected official, I know how important it is to hear from constituents and to work with broad coalitions to tackle the greatest challenges of our time. That’s why I’m excited to take action on climate.
Gov. Jay Inslee just announced his plan to enforce Washington’s limits on carbon pollution. This is a big deal. If Washington is able to join with California, British Columbia, and Oregon to take action on climate change, which combined are the world’s fifth largest economy — it is a big enough region to jump-start action on a national scale.
Inslee has been building toward this moment for years — taking time to listen to people across the state on how we can best respond to the threat of climate change. You might even have been one of the 10,000 Washingtonians who spoke out for climate action. Inslee heard you loud and clear. He announced a detailed plan for how to enforce the limits on climate pollution already on the books — limits that were enacted into law in 2008.
However, the oil industry and their allies are already fighting to maintain the status quo to protect their profits. We’ve come so far — we can’t stop now. The next step is the state Legislature. So please contact your legislators and tell them to support Inslee’s proposal.
