KENNEWICK — A man who shot a neighbor’s dog because he thought it would leave droppings in his yard has been charged in Benton County with animal cruelty.

KEPR reports the prosecutor may add a weapons charge against 82-year-old Otis McCulley.

He admits to shooting the dog in Finley last Thursday and says he has shot several other dogs that have come onto his property.

The dog was a 6-month-old Australian shepherd named Rowdy that belonged to the 10-year-old son of Kathy Davis. The family didn’t know the puppy had escaped through a fence.

The Davis family called the sheriff’s office. McCulley told deputies he had the right to kill the dog.
