A woman who was pushing a stroller died Tuesday when she was struck by a sport utility vehicle in Camas.

The woman was walking south across Northeast Third Avenue near Weir Street when a white Toyota Sequoia traveling east hit her and the stroller, according to the Camas Police Department. The crash was reported at 4:56 p.m.

The woman, whose name was not released pending family notification, was dead when firefighters arrived, according to Camas Fire Chief Nick Swinhart. At the time of the crash, she was wearing dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk, police said.

A young boy was strapped into the stroller when the SUV struck it, but the boy did not sustain any injuries, police said. The boy was transported to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center for an evaluation, and his mother was expected to pick him up from the hospital, police said. It is unclear how the woman pushing the stroller knew the boy.

The man driving the SUV was not injured in the crash and cooperated with police.

Austin Beaudoin, 13, said he was eating at a Taco Bell restaurant on Third Avenue when his younger brother, 12-year-old Nathan Beaudoin, pointed his attention toward the road. Austin Beaudoin said that’s when he witnessed the collision.

“I couldn’t really believe I saw someone die,” he said. “I was pretty scared honestly.”

He said he felt especially bad for the woman’s family because it’s almost Christmas. He and some of his friends went to the nearby Dollar Tree and bought candles, a balloon and a poster. They wrote “R.I.P.” on the poster and made a memorial near the scene of the crash.

The Camas Police Department and Clark County sheriff’s traffic homicide unit are investigating the incident. Third Avenue was closed while officers worked; it reopened at about 9 p.m.

The woman’s body was sent to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office. She is the 38th person killed in a Clark County vehicle crash so far this year.
