A Ridgefield man appeared Friday in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of strangling his girlfriend early Christmas morning after allegedly blaming her for overheating his bed.

Cody L. Thayer, 26, is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 8 on a charge of second-degree assault domestic violence. Judge Robert Lewis released Thayer on conditions, including having no contact with his 27-year-old girlfriend. The judge appointed Gerry Wear to defend Thayer.

The girlfriend said after falling asleep in the bed with Thayer, she awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of her boyfriend’s “yelling at her for making him too hot,” according to a court affidavit by Vancouver police Officer Robin Griffith.

She got out of the bed and was sitting on the floor to change her clothes when Thayer pulled her by her hair, hit her on the right side of the face and dragged her head to the floor, Griffith wrote.

He then held her down on the ground by her neck, causing pain and hampering her breathing, the affidavit says. The officer wrote that she could see marks on the victim’s neck.
