Courtney Clemmer is making the most of her opportunity for the Camas Papermakers.

In the starting lineup now with all-league post Nikki Corbett out with a knee injury, Clemmer put on a defensive display Saturday afternoon in Camas’ 43-34 victory over Woodland at the Hoops on the Holiday girls basketball tournament at Evergreen High School.

Clemmer had five blocked shots, four steals, and grabbed 10 rebounds to go with her six points. She was instrumental in an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter, erasing a one-point deficit and giving the Papermakers a 10-point lead.

“It’s a challenge at times but it’s a lot of fun to be a freshman and say I’m starting varsity,” Clemmer said. “My biggest goal is to help wherever I can. I’m a post, so I’m going to help out underneath as much as I can.”

There is no word on the extent of Corbett’s injury, so Clemmer just might stay in the lineup.

“She’s coming along,” Camas coach Chuck Knight said. “She just has to experience this, and then the confidence will come.”

Sophomore Teague Schroeder continued her hot month, sparking the Papermakers off the bench with a game-high 14 points. She made four 3-pointers.

This contest, featuring one of the best Class 2A teams in the state and a 4A squad looking for big things this season, featured one-point leads after the first, second and third quarters.

Clemmer opened the scoring in the fourth quarter. Schroeder hit a 3-pointer and then a running bank shot. Clemmer followed with another bucket to make it 34-26 Camas. Brenna Khaw would make 7 of 9 free throws down the stretch to secure the win for Camas. Khaw finished with 10 points.

Sidra Malik led Woodland with 13 points. Woodland’s defense was fierce for three quarters. The Beavers had the one-point lead going into the fourth but then went cold from the floor. Jessica Flanagan and McKenna Mulder each had six points for Woodland.
