Camas Mechanikids win design award

Camas — Smokejumpers who parachute into dangerous firefighting situations need real-time data to be effective and stay safe. The intelliglass helmet design developed by the Camas Mechanikids, a team of young technology enthusiasts, is aimed at getting them the information they need. The Mechanikids won a first-place award for the helmet's design, strategy and innovation at the 13th annual Intel Oregon FIRST Lego League youth robotics competition Jan. 18-19 in Hillsboro, Ore. The theme of the competition this year was "Nature's Fury." Each team of 9- to 14-year-olds was challenged research and develop a solution to help prepare for or respond to natural disaster. There were 119 participating teams. The Camas Mechanikids comprises Jordan Hendricks, Tate Perry, George Walker, Caleb Young, Lukas Miller and Robert Pinedo. Jeff Hendricks, Ken Perry and Candace Miller are the team's coaches.
