U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, has mastered Republican political stalling tactics. I had heard this, and I saw it firsthand when I was one of the 10 citizens who showed up for her recent town hall meeting. For most of the hour she used lots of words, however, she droned on and on without answering the original question concerning immigration reform.
For years, the Republicans have brought immigration reform to a halt, adamant that the border has to be absolutely secure before other immigration issues will be tackled. Though in the real world, there is no absolute security. Even when pressed, Herrera Beutler would not offer ideas on how to absolutely secure the border or on anything else related to immigration reform, though she claimed a marked interest in the subject since she was very young.
I did appreciate the invitation to attend the meeting. However, I was disappointed that more constituents did not attend and that more questions were not asked — maybe one or two of which could have been answered.
