Battle Ground’s Faley sets record to win state bowling title (with video)

Tigers poised to win third-straight team title Friday

Wylicia Faley left almost nothing to spare.

The Battle Ground bowler struck early and often Friday in winning her second Class 4A state individual title.

The senior set a state record with a six-game score of 1,397. She took a perfect game into the 10th frame of her second game, in which she scored 277.

Faley’s performance was the top Clark County highlight of many Friday at Narrows Plaza Bowl near Tacoma.

Defending champion Madison Crockett of Skyview placed second with a score of 1,272. She trailed Faley 904-899 after four games, but could not keep pace.

Adrianne Schock of Battle Ground placed fifth with 1,215. Shelby Chartrand of Camas placed eighth with 1,120.

Dakota Varela of Hudson’s Bay placed third in the 3A individual competition. Her score of 1,248 was 28 pins behind winner Shannon Bailey of Wilson (Tacoma).

Mountain View’s Alex Lanning finished fifth with a score of 1,207.

Faley said Friday’s title trumps the one she won as a sophomore.

“It was definitely a lot more exciting,” she said. “I was more focused and wanted it more. I had goals coming in, and I wanted to go out a winner.”

Her opening game of 233 put her in third place. Then things really started rolling.

She made nine strikes to open the second game. She needed three strikes in the final frame to score a perfect 300.

“I felt the pressure,” Faley said. “I did something funky and pulled the ball to the left.”

She knocked down eight pins to open the 10th frame and picked up her spare before closing with a nine for 277.

But that near-perfect game hardly wrapped up the title. A score of 170 in the fourth game allowed Crockett to nearly catch her.

“The fourth game I got frustrated and lost my focus,” Faley said. “I knew I had to get out of that funk. I kept telling myself that I needed to focus.

Faley closed with scores of 235 and 258, which were higher than any other bowler for those games.

Tigers hunting third team title

The team competition continues today with Battle Ground seeking its third consecutive 4A title. With 5,709, the Tigers hold a sizable lead over second-place Wenatchee (5,288). Heritage is fourth with 4,733.

Fourteen Baker games will wrap up Saturday’s team competition.

Faley says the team’s unity is its key to success.

“We’re in competition with each other, but we don’t have arguments like I’ve seen on other teams,” she said. “We have a pretty good lead, but anything is possible. If we all stay focused we should increase our lead.”

In the 3A team race, Fort Vancouver sits in fourth place with 4,945 and Columbia River is fifth with 4,825. Bremerton leads with 5,218.
