Battle Ground’s community development director is resigning to take a job in Camas.

Robert Maul’s last day on the job will be Thursday, capping an 11-year career with the city. For the past seven years, he’s served as the city’s community development director. Before that, he was the city’s assistant planner.

For the Camas resident, who served on that city’s planning commission before taking the full-time job, the move is a homecoming.

“For me, it’s a lifestyle choice, being closer to home,” he said.

But the position comes with a pay cut. In Battle Ground, Maul’s salary topped $102,000 a year. In Camas, where Maul will work as a planning manager, the no. 2 spot in the community development department, he’ll start at about $90,000.

Last summer, Camas hired Finance Director Catherine Huber Nickerson from Battle Ground. In December, the city named Pete Capell, Clark County’s former public works director, as city administrator.

Maul’s first day on the job will be Feb. 23.
