Woodland overcame a slow start to pull away for first-round victory in the 1A district tournament in Kelso.

Trailing 9-6 after one quarter, the Beavers outscored Castle Rock 19-5 in the second quarter. Kyle Hendrix scored 11 of his 13 points in that period.

“It was good to see our mental toughness,” Woodland coach Jason Buffum said. “We didn’t cash it in. Instead, we played good defense and got some stops.”

Friday was the third time Woodland had faced Castle Rock, a fellow Trico League team. The Beavers will play another Trico team Tuesday when they face King’s Way with a berth to regionals on the line.

Woodland won the only meeting between the teams 58-55 in overtime on Jan. 7. A second meeting Feb. 7 was canceled due to snow.

Jake Rosenbalm had 12 rebounds and Hendrix added 11. Woodland also had only nine turnovers.
