Transition basketball and strong free-throw shooting carried the host Hawks to victory in their 2A District 4 tournament opener.

Alan Haagen scored 18 points, seven of them in the second quarter when Hockinson surged ahead to stay. The Hawks outscored the Bearcats 21-9 in the second quarter.

"We just played our transition game well and did a good job of not forcing things and making the extra pass," Hockinson coach Trevor Person said.

Hockinson (17-4) will play Capital of Olympia at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Kelso High School in the district semifinals.

Hockinson was 19 for 20 from the free-throw line against the visitors from Chehalis.

Jess Krahn scored 12 points, and Littleton Davidson scored six of his eight in the first half off the bench. Person said Krahn and Davidson wore down the W.F. West post players.

Nate Gunderson added 11 points for the Hawks, who had scoring from eight players.
