BREMERTON — A 22-year-old Bremerton man was killed late Sunday in an Interstate 5 collision near Mountlake Terrace involving a tanker truck filled with liquid nitrogen.

The Washington State Patrol told The Kitsap Sun that a Honda Accord passed the tanker truck in the HOV lane, swerved to the left, hit the barrier, then swerved back to the right and hit the truck.

The car was crushed by the truck, which was carrying about 7,000 pounds of liquid nitrogen. Washington State Patrol reported it took several hours to unload the nitrogen from the truck. All northbound lanes of Interstate 5 were closed until about 7:45 a.m.

The driver of the truck was a 50-year-old man from Puyallup, who was uninjured. The Bremerton man’s identity was not released, pending family notification.
