Letter: Open our eyes to those in need

I agree with Olivia Weesner’s Feb. 9 letter, “Homeless numbers rising.” It is about time that we open our eyes to see the people around us who are struggling. I think that not only homeless numbers are rising, but the poverty number in general, and we should be doing something to prevent this.

Have we become so selfish that we cannot see beyond our needs? All the innocent children who grow up in poverty will never know what a real childhood is. They have done nothing wrong, yet they are suffering. And how about all those people who lost their jobs and simply need help to get back up again?

It’s crazy to think that our neighbor state Oregon has so much homeless. Many of us drive there for work and take strolls in downtown, yet we choose not to see all the people hurting. We choose to believe it was their own actions that got them here, and their actions should help them get back up.

Who are we, and what has the world done to us?

Thought for the day: Help someone in need.
