KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine’s embattled President Viktor Yanukovych has replaced the chief of the country’s armed forces a day after at least 25 people were killed in clashes between protesters and police.
The move, announced Wednesday in a presidential decree, comes as the acting Defense Minister said the army may take part in a nationwide anti-terrorist operation to restore order.
Yanukovych’s government has frequently referred to the protesters demanding his resignation as “terrorists.” The protests have gone on for nearly three months.
