SEATTLE — People who want to learn more about the first proposed charter schools in Washington state can attend public forums beginning Monday in Spokane.

The Washington Charter School Commission will give each applicant of 19 applicants 10 minutes to talk about their proposals. Each forum will also include 30 minutes for public comments.

The forums are part of the evaluation process that will help the statewide commission decide which charter schools will open next fall.

Voters have approved opening up to 40 charter school in the state over the next five years. They can be authorized by either the statewide commission or by any school board that goes through the process to become an authorizer. So far only one school board — Spokane — is allowed to charter schools one of these non-profit independent public schools.
