Police: No permit in botched tree removal

No cutting permit was issued before a botched tree removal resulted in a 110-foot Douglas fir crashing onto an Image neighborhood street Sunday, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

The tree fell onto Northeast 28th Street about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, while a man was attempting to remove the large fir from a vacant commercial lot at 13714 N.E. 28th St. No one was injured, but traffic was blocked until about 3:30 p.m.

Kim Kapp, spokeswoman for the Vancouver police, said that the property owner, George Almajan, had not obtained a required city permit for the tree removal.

Responding officers did not take action against Almajan, Kapp said. Instead they directed traffic and wrote an informational report, which will be forwarded to the city’s code compliance department, she said.

“Ultimately the property owner is responsible for having all paperwork,” Kapp said.
