CINCINNATI (AP) — The Bengals have promoted Hue Jackson to offensive coordinator, replacing Jay Gruden.

Gruden was hired as the Redskins’ head coach Thursday.

Jackson has been the offensive coordinator for the Redskins, Falcons and Raiders. He was Oakland’s head coach in 2011 and pushed for the trade that sent Carson Palmer from the Bengals to the Raiders.

He was fired after Oakland failed to make the playoffs. The Bengals hired him back as an assistant, and he served as the running backs coach last season.

Jackson takes over a West Coast offense that has grown in each of the last three seasons behind quarterback Andy Dalton. The Bengals have lost in the first round of the playoffs all three seasons, with Dalton throwing one touchdown pass and four interceptions.
