CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP) — Chase Plummer scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Maryland-Baltimore County beat Maine 79-76 Saturday.

Malik Garner’s jumper with 4:45 remaining gave UMBC (5-11, 1-2 America East) a 72-70 lead and sparked an 8-2 spurt. Plummer, who had four points during that stretch, capped it off by hitting a pair of free throws with 2:33 to play.

Maine went 1 of 3 from the field and 2 of 4 from the free throw line from that point. Dimitry Coronel missed a 3-point shot to tie the game with 1 second left.

UMBC made just 29 of 76 (38.2 percent) field goals and 4 of 26 (15.4 percent) 3-point shots but pulled down 17 offensive rebounds — Maine had just five — which the Retrievers turned into 18-2 advantage on second-chance points.

Zarko Valjarevic paced Maine (3-11, 1-1), which shot 54.9 percent from the floor, with 24 points.
