JERUSALEM — U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is trying to give a boost to the flagging Mideast peace process, saying he believes Israel and a future Palestine could become an “island of stability” in a turbulent region.

Biden made his comments at a meeting in Jerusalem with Israeli President Shimon Peres. Biden came for a one-day visit to attend the funeral of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Biden says that even as unrest shakes the wider Middle East, “the one place where there is a possibility for an island of stability … is between the Palestinian people and the Israeli people.”

He said both sides have “difficult decisions” to make and expressed confidence that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is up to the task.
