Manuel, Adrian win 100 free races at Austin GP

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Simone Manuel won the women’s 100-meter freestyle and Nathan Adrian took the men’s event on the opening day of the Arena Grand Prix on Friday night.

Manuel pulled ahead of the field in the final 25 meters to win in 54.38 seconds. Allison Schmitt was a half-second behind and Megan Romano and Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace were tied for third in 54.94.

Adrian controlled the men’s final from the start, finishing in 48.26. Yannick Agnel of France was second in 49.31, followed by Conor Dwyer in 49.39.

Katie Ledecky won the women’s 400 free in 4:04.46, about 5 seconds ahead of runner-up Lotte Friis. Micah Lawrence edged Laura Sogar to take the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.73 — winning by just 0.41 seconds.

Other winners included Tom Shields (men’s 100 fly), England’s Ross Murdoch (200 breaststroke), Agnel (400 free) and Canada’s Noemie Thomas (women’s 100 fly).
