BALTIMORE (AP) — Candon Rusin scored 22 points and Brian Volkel added 10 rebounds with nine assists as Vermont cruised past Maryland-Baltimore County 73-47 Saturday.

The Catamounts (10-8, 4-0 American East) shot 44.2 percent from the field and hit nine 3-pointers. Sandro Carissimo scored 12 points and Clancy Rugg had nine with six boards.

UMBC (5-13, 1-4) was held to 15-of-47 shooting (31.9 percent) and went just 3 of 14 from 3-point range. Chase Plummer led the Retrievers with 12 points and Rodney Elliot added 10.

Vermont jumped ahead quickly as Rusin hit two 3-pointers and a jumper to grab an 11-0 lead. UMBC responded as Will Darley made a pair of free throws to make it 19-12, but a three-point play by Rugg on the ensuing possession increased Vermont’s lead to double digits for good and they went on to take a 39-20 advantage at the break.
