NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Vicar’s in Trouble won the Grade III Lecomte Stakes on Saturday, placing the Louisiana-bred horse among the early candidates to qualify for the 2014 Kentucky Derby.

With Rosie Napravnik aboard, Vicar’s in Trouble broke out of the gate with the leaders and steadily pulled away, winning by nearly seven lengths.

Vicar’s in Trouble completed the mile-and-70-yard race in 1:42.57, earning $120,000 for the victory. The winner paid $5.40, $4 and $2.80 while boosting his career earnings to $148,900 with the second victory of his three-race career.

Albano finished second, paying $8 and $3.80, while 3-1 favorite Gold Hawk finished third, a half-length behind Albano, and paid $2.20.

The $200,000 Lecomte is the first of three Kentucky Derby prep races at the Fair Grounds Race Course, followed by the Risen Star Stakes and the Louisiana Derby.
