SILVER FALLS STATE PARK, Ore. — Oregon authorities say a 10-year-old boy fell 40 feet off a trail while hiking in Silver Falls State Park, but his injuries aren’t considered life-threatening.

The Statesman-Journal reports the boy was with his father when he stopped to lean against a railing Sunday afternoon. Oregon State Police Trooper Nick Rhoades says the railing broke and the boy tumbled 40 feet into shallow water.

Drakes Crossing Fire District Chief Fred Patterson says the boy, who was not named, had scratches and possibly a broken arm and head trauma. He says the district got a call about the injury around 3:45 p.m.

Authorities say the father carried his son across a creek to wait for medical crews. An ATV drove the boy out of the area, and he was taken to a hospital.
