CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Oscar Pistorius’ lawyers have been negotiating an out-of court settlement for nearly six months with representatives of the parents of slain girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, which a legal expert says could be raised by prosecutors in the Olympic athlete’s murder trial.

Lawyers for both sides said Thursday the negotiations are continuing and declined to comment on any details of a possible settlement, which media reports say could see the double-amputee runner pay in the region of $275,000 to Steenkamp’s family.

Steenkamp lawyer Dup de Bruyn says discussions started around August, when he first told The Associated Press that the parties were talking. Brian Webber, a lawyer for Pistorius, says “clearly one would like to reach a settlement.”

Pistorius’ murder trial is due to start March 3.
