Letter: Sowell is off base

The Columbian

What alternate universe has conservative columnist Thomas Sowell arrived from? (“Fact-free liberals are reduced to character assassination,” Jan. 21) The left is the originator of more character assassination in lieu of facts than the right? Even as a moderate who has voted for members of both parties, this makes my head do a 180 on my shoulders.

According to some talk-show hosts, columnists and elected officials of conservative ilk, Obama is a secret Muslim whose agenda is aiding an Islamic jihad. They insist he’s not a real American and demand he produce his birth certificate. Obama’s attempt to provide some level of basic health care for the millions who can’t afford it has been equated with the Holocaust, which makes him … anyone? Oh, yeah, that would be Adolf Hitler. Sarah Palin, whom Sowell seems to believe has been unfairly attacked by the left, is, herself, one of the worst name callers and finger pointers in a field crowded with unholy competition. Oh, by the way, I don’t think that pointing out she rarely knows what she’s talking about qualifies as character assassination.

Are conservatives the champions of fact-based debate? Yeah, these people love facts. Especially the ones they invent.
