ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say the driver of a tractor-trailer rig was unable to avoid hitting a pedestrian who walked out into a southbound lane of Interstate 5 south of Roseburg. The 55-year-old pedestrian died at the scene.

Police identified the man who was fatally injured Wednesday as Ronald Page of Roseburg.

Lt. Douglas Ladd says the 29-year-old truck driver from Elk Grove, Calif., is cooperating with the investigation.

Witnesses say Page appeared to make several attempts to cross the freeway’s southbound lanes. A number of vehicles swerved to avoid him.
