WOODLAND — A restoration project created habitat on the North Fork of the Lewis River for young steelhead and salmon in late June.

The Eagle Island boat launch and parking lot on the lower North Fork were used as a staging area. The Cowlitz Tribe is doing the restoration project with money from PacifiCorp and the Washington State Salmon Recovery Funding Board.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, which owns the boat launch, closed the site while a helicopter hoisted logs and positioned them in the river.

The logs were cabled together in groups to provide refuge for juvenile fish during high stream flows.
