Bridge closed in La Conner after tip of falling piece

LA CONNER — A Skagit County bridge in northwest Washington has been closed as a precaution after a tipster reported seeing an object — possibly a piece of concrete — fall from the bottom of the structure and into the channel below.

State Transportation Department investigators have been dispatched to determine whether the so-called Rainbow Bridge near La Conner is sound.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports that county Public Works Director Dan Berentson says public works and sheriff’s department employees were unable to confirm whether any piece of the bridge had fallen off.

Berentson says the bridge was closed to traffic shortly after the Thursday afternoon report. Traffic was rerouted.

Skagit County owns the arch bridge, which is painted red, unlike other typically green road bridges in Washington.

The bridge is in the same county as the Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River fell into the water on May 23, 2013.
