Letter: Failure to advocate common sense

The Columbian
Published: July 7, 2014, 12:00am

In Robert M. Baba’s June 30 letter “Additional restriction is not the solution” a hot button word was used — “confiscation” — that has absolutely nothing to do with the proper solution proposed by common sense gun-control advocates. Confiscation of guns in the hands of criminals and the mentality ill is a reasonable expectation. Where Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, has consistently failed is by not advocating for common sense background checks mandated for gun shows and Internet sales that are opposed by the very profitable gun manufacturers she caters to. If 74 school shootings since the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre has no sway over her, nothing will.

More help with the problems of the mentally ill is needed but let’s pull out all the stops to try to keep more innocent people alive. Our representative just doesn’t get it. A new member of Congress for our district is more than justified.
