Community notebook: Wrestler wins title at national tourney

Jake Rogers of Battle Ground claimed a freestyle wrestling national championship to cap a busy season.

Rogers, who will be in the eighth grade, won the 120-pound freestyle tournament for his age group at the ASICS Kids Freestyle and Greco Roman National Tournament, which took place June 23-25 in Orem, Utah. Wrestlers from 38 states took part in the competition.

Before winning the freestyle title, placed second to Logan Jensen of Utah in the Greco-Roman style finals at 120 pounds. One day later Rogers turned the table on Jensen to win the freestyle title.

To qualify for the nationals, Rogers went 15-0 at the Cliff Keen West Kids and Cadet Regional Championships, which took place June 15-21 at Pocatello, Idaho.

Rogers wrestles for the North County Bobcats Wrestling Club and is coached by his father, Jay Rogers.

Local cyclist sixth at national race

Colby Wait-Molyneux of Vancouver took sixth place on Friday in the under-23 time trial at the USA Cycling Amateur & Para Road Nationals in Madison, Wisc.

He completed the 17.2-mile course in 34 minutes and 15 seconds.

Wait-Molyneux, 20, is racing this year for the Seattle-based Hagens Berman under-23 Cycling Team. His next event will be the Cascade Cycling Classic, a six-day stage race July 15-20 at Bend, Ore.

Youth wins taekwondo gold medal

Xaavan Dolence representing Vancouver Taekwondo Academy won a sparring title at the USA Taekwondo National Championships, which concluded on Monday in San Jose.

Dolence took the title for blue belt competitiors ages 15-17 in the light middleweight class.

Also placing from the Vancouver Taekwondo Academy was Jackson Braunschweig who took third in the sparring tournament for ages 12-14 red belt bantamweights.

Also participating in the nationals were Kamlen Singsit (10-11 red belt under 100 pounds), Finn Leask (10-11 blue belt under 100 pounds) and Lucas Braunschweig (8-9 red belt heavyweight).

CCRC summer 5K series continues

Eric Dolezal of Vancouver won the July 2 race in the Clark County Running Club’s summer series.

Completing the 3-mile course in 17 minutes and 1 second, the 32-year-old was the first of 132 runners to finish the circuit that started and ended at Grass Valley Park in Camas.

Katarina Mueller, 22, of Vancouver was the first woman to finish.

The series of Wednesday runs shifts to the Salmon Creek Trail for the July 9 race. The run starts at 7 p.m. from near Klineline Pond in Salmon Creek Park. Participants should arrive by 6:40 p.m. to register. Cost is $2, free for members of the running club.
