MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK — Searchers on Wednesday resumed looking for a 64-year-old Tacoma man who went missing while hiking the Wonderland Trail at Mount Rainier.
National Park Service spokeswoman Casey Broom says the search area includes steep, rugged and snow-covered terrain in the east and southeast part of the mountain.
Edwin Birch was last seen by his son Saturday as they hiked the popular 93-mile Wonderland Trail, which loops the mountain. They were doing a 19-mile day hike between Box Canyon and White River, starting from opposite ends.
The son saw his father at the midpoint, but when the son got back to their vehicle and went to pick up his father late Saturday night, he couldn’t find him.
Broom says Wednesday’s search includes two helicopters and about 40 people on the ground.
