WOODLAND — The trial for former Woodland Primary School Principal Mark Houk has been pushed back from Monday to early October.

Houk faces three counts of fourth-degree assault stemming from allegations that he physically abused a developmentally disabled third-grade student.

Police responded to a child-abuse complaint at the school on March 6 and arrested Houk the following month on charges related to three confrontations in October, January and February.

The incidents mostly occurred in the school’s “reset room,” a place where students are sent to calm down after exhibiting disruptive behavior, according to court documents. In one of the confrontations, Houk allegedly restrained a student on the floor for more than 23 minutes.

Police arrested Houk in April. Last month, the district hired Steve Carney, a former California educator, to fill his position.

For now, Houk’s two-day jury trial has been reset for Oct. 6 in Cowlitz County District Court. The date could change, depending on what happens at his readiness hearing on Sept. 30.
