A Battle Ground man appeared in Clark County Superior Court Thursday on suspicion of vehicular assault in connection with a wrong-way crash on state Highway 14 early Wednesday.

Mark E. Chapman, 59, of Battle Ground was driving a 2001 Mercury Sable west in the eastbound lanes of the highway when his car collided into an eastbound 2013 Toyota Camry, according to Washington State Patrol. The collision broke the rib of the Camry driver, Kurt Gilge, 53, of Camas. Gilge was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center and later discharged.

An officer who responded to the crash scene observed that Chapman emanated a strong odor of alcohol and had watery, bloodshot eyes, court records say. He had a blood alcohol content of 0.206 percent, according to court records. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

Judge Scott Collier held Chapman in lieu of $10,000 and appointed Vancouver attorney Shon Bogar to defend him. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charge Aug. 7.

The crash was reported at 12:14 a.m. near Southeast Columbia Way, and crews cleared the scene about three and a half hours later.
