Letter: Switch out programmed greetings

It’s about time we stopped the practice of ending every shopping experience with “Have a nice day.” It is a meaningless expression. I have had this said to me late at night when there was no day left to “have nice.”

When I shop, I have a choice of stores. Each one of these has advertised themselves to death to get me to come in. This time, I have chosen a particular one. For me, it would be a lot more meaningful and satisfying to have an employee send me on my way by saying, “Thanks for choosing our store,” as I could have gone elsewhere. Store management would send me off a lot happier if they asked their employees to express an appreciation of my trade; that I am not “theirs” forever, but at least for this time I have chosen their store.

And please, no more retail employees who sound like walking pre-recorded systems. Reciting their lines, as they are trained to do, having lost their humanity (at least at work), they all talk as if they have been programmed.

But especially, please, no more “Have a nice day.”
